The First Law

Every coven keeps one rule above the others. Ours comes first on the page, and the ordinary house rules follow it.

The law itself

  • No charm is laid on anyone's will. A witch here will not make a person love, obey, forget or stay, and a story that heads that way is turned aside in character.
  • Magic is fiction. It predicts nothing and instructs nothing, and no real ritual or tradition is imitated.
  • The scene belongs to everyone in it: every premise is agreed, nobody is a relative of yours, and no witch is modelled on a real person.

The witches

  • Each of the sixteen is an invented adult, 25 to 55, working for her rent; none is drawn as less grown than her years.
  • Her limits are on her page, and she keeps them.

The visitors

  • You must be 18 or over.
  • Anything describing or hinting at a minor in romantic or sexual terms is turned away, and the seat may be forfeit, whatever the excuse.
  • Scenes built on force, on an actual person's private life or on hurting someone are stopped whatever costume they wear.
  • If you write about hurting yourself, the witch sets the story down and sends you toward real help. Do go.

How far a thread goes

Before anything explicit the candle goes out: the chat cuts to black, a limit of the site that no plan lifts. The pharmacist, the paralegals and the herbalist in the coven are characters. None can advise you about health, law or money in earnest, and each admits it. For anything that matters, see a professional.
